At DEF EVENTS & BEYOND, we strive to create an inclusive, socially active atmosphere where families and individuals from both the D/deaf, hard of hearing and hearing communities can come together to enjoy and have fun.
Our goal is to dismantle biases and prejudices that cause a divide and replace them with opportunities for engagement and collaboration.
Our Mission
DEF EVENTS & BEYOND’s mission is to uplift, empower, and validate individuals while building a strong, inclusive bond between the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and hearing communities.
We aim to create a sense of belonging, respect, and appreciation for the differences between these two communities. Our hope is to form long-lasting friendships and bonds for future generations.
What DEB is Focus on Doing?
DEF EVENTS & BEYOND was established in 2014 with the sole purpose of strengthening the relationship between the D/deaf, Hard of Hearing and the hearing communities.
DEF EVENTS & BEYOND’s philosophy is to produce and provide quality and consistency, creating spaces where cultures and values can be exchanged through play, laughter, and socializing.
Clarity for Members
For members of the D/deaf and Hard of Hearing community, it can be challenging to find social spaces that offer a sense of belonging and relationship.
Some use American Sign Language, while others prefer speech, and everyone has different backgrounds and experiences. Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs) can also feel torn between the Deaf and hearing worlds.
Instead of focusing on differences and divides, DEF EVENTS & BEYOND provides spaces where these differences are recognized, celebrated, and shared. Everyone can come together with old friends and make new ones.
DEF EVENTS & BEYOND strives to provide more than just events; we aim to create a sense of community and belonging for everyone.
Any company or agency with 1+ employees providing service in Ontario is legally responsible for paying for interpreting services. Any hospital and/or medical service across Canada is legally responsible to provide a qualified sign language interpreter, regardless of size. The Deaf person is usually not responsible for paying/finding the interpreter.Accessibility means so much more than ‘getting into the room.’ Accessibility ensures each and every participant can share their story.By providing Sign Language-English interpretation at your events, meetings, and workshops, you ensure each participant has that opportunity.
